ARCHIVED - Cartagena, Mazarrón and La Unión: medical centres open and local surgeries closed during the coronavirus emergency
43 surgeries close down as resources are pooled at the 16 main medical centres in the area
Following the announcement earlier in the week that in response to the coronavirus emergency the regional health service of Murcia is closing local “consultorios” or surgeries and concentrating its staff and resources in the “centros de salud”, clarification of what this means in the Health Area of Cartagena, which includes Mazarrón, has now been issued.
The 16 main medical centres will take over the patients and appointments of the 43 “consultorios”, or local surgeries, which fall within their catchment areas, and are to implement “triage” systems to allow patients with respiratory complaints to be dealt with separately from others. The system is designed to reduce the risk of Covid-19 contagion for both patients and medical staff, and on Wednesday the Mayors and councillors in charge of health in Cartagena, La Unión and Fuente Álamo met to commit themselves to supporting the changes fully.
The 16 Centros de Salud in the Cartagena area are the following:

All other “consultorios” in the Cartagena health area are now effectively closed, including those in Canteras, Cuesta Blanca, La Magdalena, La Vaguada, Los Puertos Santa Bárbara, Perín, San Isidro, Tallante, El Albujón, La Palma, Las Lomas de Albujón, La Aparecida, La Puebla, Alumbres, Los Mateos, Vista Alegre, Llano del Beal, Islas Menores, Los Belones, Los Nietos, Los Urrutias, Balsapintada, Cuevas de Reylló, El Escobar, El Estrecho, La Pinilla, Las Palas, Los Almagros, Los Cánovas, Camposol, Cañada del Gallego, Majada, Cabo de Palos, Playa Honda, Isla Plana, La Azohía, La Aljorra, Portmán and Roche.
The “SUAP” A&E units remain open in Mazarrón, Fuente Álamo, Los Dolores, Virgen de la Caridad (Cartagena) and La Unión, as do the “Puntos de Atención Continuada” in La Manga del Mar Menor, Pozo Estrecho and La Unión.
The regional health authorities are stressing time and time again that you should only go to a doctor IF IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT.
All non-urgent operations, consultant appointments etc in hospitals have been cancelled, presecriptions can be repeated in pharmacies for a further 6 months without you having to go back to the doctor, suspected cases of coronavirus are being analysed over the phone to prevent those who are possibly contagious going to the doctor or to a hospital, so if you feel unwell and think you may have the virus call the numbers below. ONLY go to the hospital to visit if it is essential and remember, visitor numbers are restricted to ONE person, who will be temperature tested before going to the ward.
REMEMBER, ONLY ONE PERSON MAY TRAVEL IN A CAR; YOU RISK A FINE OF 601 EUROS FOR MORE THAN ONE PERSON IN A CAR.
There are dozens of informative articles about every aspect of this crisis on the www.murciatoday.com webpage in the news section.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
