ARCHIVED - Bumper weekend forecast in Benidorm with 95 per cent hotel occupancy
Some hotels in the Marina Baixa coastal resort could be "filled to capacity" this weekend
The Valencia region's hotel employers association, Hosbec, has forecast hotel occupancy in Benidorm will reach up to 95% this Bank Holiday weekend to mark Consitution Day in Spain, despite a surge in Covid cases.
President of Hosbec, Toni Mayor, admitted that the new restrictions being imposed in some European countries due to the increased incidence of Covid could affect the arrival of tourists this month, but stressed that "for the moment it has not been evident".
He said that hotels in Benidorm are not experiencing cancellations of bookings made for December like other places in Spain are reporting, and that for the coming Bank Holiday weekend, "Benidorm expects occupancies above 90% or even 95% depending on the weather, so in some cases establishments could be filled to capacity".
And although most of the visitors are likely to be domestic tourists, Hosbec is confident that almost 47% of Benidorm's beds will be occupied by British tourists.
Looking ahead to Christmas bookings, Mayor remains cautious. "We will have to wait to see what restrictions may be applied by different countries depending on the evolution of the virus to see if it will have a real effect on bookings," he said.
The Hosbec president also pointed out there are still up to 8,000 beds that will not be filled due to the absence of tourists from the prensioners' Imserso scheme, although he is confident that this loss will made up between the months of February and May, "when people are keen to travel".
And on the matter of the implementation of the Covid passport at leisure and hospitality venues in the Valencia region from Friday December 3, Mayor said the sector "looks favourably on it, despite the fact that it could initially hinder the trips of those tourists who have not been vaccinated".
"It may be another barrier to prevent a percentage of unvaccinated people from not travelling, but we believe that in the long run vaccination will increase," he added.
