ARCHIVED - Awareness campaign to recycle cooking oil in Mazarron
A new awareness campaign aims to reduce the amount of used olive oil thrown down Mazarrón’s drains
Mazarrón Town Council has signed a new agreement, at absolutely zero cost to themselves, for the company Gerefan to launch an awareness campaign about the importance of recycling used cooking oil in the municipality through activities and workshops.
With this agreement, the Town Council aims to prevent the dumping of used vegetable oils into the sewage system. Domestic oil is currently one of the causes of contamination of urban waste water, and that’s why the company Gerefran is committed to carrying out an awareness campaign to try and stop this harmful pollution.
Currently in the municipality there are 6 containers for the collection of used domestic oil distributed around Mazarrón, Puerto de Mazarrón and the surrounding districts.
The company intends to carry out the following three measures in Mazarrón:
- Activities in Primary Schools: a stand will be set up in the school where a participative activity will be carried out with the pupils, and funnels will be handed out that can be used to siphon used cooking oil into jars and bottles. Students will also receive an informative sheet telling them and their families the exact location of the oil recycling containers.
- Activities in Secondary Schools: a triple activity will be carried out, including a workshop on making homemade soap using waste oil; a presentation about recycling oil for pupils, teachers and the parent-teacher association; and handing out funnels to all pupils.
- Activities in Local Markets: there will be information set up at local markets on the benefits of recycling household oil.
