<span style='color:#780948'>ARCHIVED</span> - September 9 to 11, first weekend of the annual Guadalentin Games in Lorca The 43rd edition of the annual Guadalentin Games gets under way in Lorca between September 9 and 11, the first of six weekends of sports activities and tournaments designed to encourage people to take up various forms of healthy physical exercise.

The opening popular walk has been suspended for the last three years (in 2019 because of heavy rain and in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid pandemic), but his year is expected to attract large numbers of people as it has in the past. Registration is on the day at 18.45 in the Plaza de España before the 5.5-kilometre walk begins at 20.00.

The pitches used are those of Embarre, Mundial, Anexo Mundial, Casuco and Los Tollos.

Friday September 9

20.00. Walk from the Plaza de España to the official opening ceremony of the games (which takes place at approximately 21.45).

21.00. Jumodi trophy football matches at municipal pitches.

Saturday September 10

9.00. Spanish national squash championship at C.D.Felipe VI.

09.30. The Feria de Lorca Table Tennis Open in the Pabellón de San José (morning younger age groups, afternoon and evening from 16.00 youth and veterans). Domingo

10.00: Orienteering for beginners at the Casa del Deporte. Theoretical instruction from 10.00 to 11.30, practice in the Alamedas de Lorca from 12.00 to 13.30.

Sunday September 11

Morning: The Feria de Lorca Table Tennis Open in the Pabellón de San José – men’s and women’s open.

8.00: 10th annual Peñarrubia Trail cross country mountain run (starting next to the Pérez de Hita primary school, ending at Lorca castle).

9.00: Regional orienteering championship race at Mapa del Oasis in the Sierra de Tercia.

9.30: The horas Feria de Lorca Table Tennis Open continues in the Pabellón de San José.

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern city has built its tourism industry. Among these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish quarter of the castle and synagogue, Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.

Lorca Tourist Office Unfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as two earthquakes measuring 5.3 and 5.5 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011, claiming 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.

The tourist office relocated for 14 years to Calle San Patricio, near the church, but has now returned to its former premises alongside the Palacio de Guevara in the Plaza Concha Sandoval, or Plaza de la Bordadora (click for map).

Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only along difficult tracks or by boat!

However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a series of processions in which the Whites (Paso Blanco) and Blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.

Lorca also has a Parador hotel, located within the historic castle.
