ARCHIVED - One dies and four injured following explosion at petrol station in Cartagena
Two contractors were adapting a subterranean tank when the explosion occurred
Updated Friday; unfortunately the more seriously injured man failed to recover from his wounds and died on Friday.
Two people were seriously injured and three required hospital treatment following a gas explosion on Tuesday at 11.45 in the petrol station of the Plaza de España in Cartagena, the main roundabout at the bottom of the Alameda and close to the Police Comisaria of the Policia Nacional.
Three ambulances from the Murcian Health Service, firefighters and personnel from the Fire Extinguishing, Rescue and Civil Protection Service of the city as well as local police were on the scene quickly, closing off the Repsol petrol station and ensuring that no other members of the public were near to the site in case of complications due to the extreme fire risk in the establishment.
Two men were seriously wounded in the accident; a 29 year old contractor who suffered 90% burns and his workmate, a 40 year old with 20% of his body burnt.
The two seriously wounded work for the Madrid-based company contracted to deep clean one of the subterranean diesel tanks on site and adapt it to new legislation. During the process one of the men was cutting metal with a radial saw, a spark from which appears to have caused the explosion.
Both have been taken to the specialised burns unit of the Virgen de La Arrixaca hospital in Murcia City.
Eye witnesses describe the explosion as having been like an earthquake, which literally lifted those close by off their feet. One of the three women injured,( 23, 40 and 80 ) who worked in the petrol station, was hit by the force of the explosion and was thrown to the ground; she has been taken to the Santa Lucia with chest pains. The other two were treated for shock, and the 80 year old suffered minor injuries after falling over during the explosion.
After the initial explosion there was no fire, but firemen poured foam into the tanks to ensure that the risk of any subsequent fire was minimised.
The incident will be subject to an investigation by the regional department of work accidents.
