As Spain enters phase one of the Covid de-escalation, the evolution of daily figures relating to the Covid pandemic becomes of critical importance as the authorities anxiously wait to see if allowing greater freedom of movement translates into new cases.
Although the “Monday effect” has to be taken into consideration, the figures released today (compiled on Sunday evening) are positive for the moment, with 373 new confirmed cases (diagnosed through PCR swab testing), the best daily total for more than two months, ( specifically since March 8th when 330 cases were reported) and the epidemic was spreading.
Tomorrow figures are expected to be higher, as the data presented on Monday is notoriously unreliable due to the lack of staff over the weekend, which results in artificially low data on Mondays; last week for example, only 465 cases were notified on Monday but by Tuesday the number of new cases was back up to 1,034 and remained consistent with this level for the remainder of the week.
It is already clear that these figures will change significantly in the next few hours following the “discovery” of 2,721 new cases in Cataluña; how these cases came to be “lost” in the first place is not clear, but the figures will be adjusted in the coming days once it has been clearly identified as to which dates they correspond.
The numbers of deceased fell to 123 in the Monday figures, after two consecutive days of decrease over the weekend (179 on Saturday and 143 on Sunday) bringing the total number of fatalities up to 26,744.
The number of recoveries in the last 24 hours is 973, the total rising to 135,139.
The general downward trend in the figures for Monday also extended to hospitalizations and admissions into intensive care units. On Sunday there were 257 new hospitalisations, almost half of them, corresponding to Madrid and Cataluña, with 91 and 36 respectively. 20 patients were placed into
intensive care, of which 9 correspond to the Community of Madrid and 4 to Cataluña.
Neither area has been permitted to enter phase 1 of the de-escalation process due to the current number of new cases.
