ARCHIVED - Murcia-Cartagena rail services resume after flood damage on Wednesday
Repairs and reconstruction have taken a month and 11.5 million euros
Just over a month after the severe flooding brought by the gota fría storm of mid-September, described by many as the most serious in the last 50 years, rail services between the cities of Murcia and Cartagena are to be resumed on Wednesday 16th October following repair and reconstruction work which required the investment of approximately 11.5 million euros.
Apart from debris carried by the floodwater being strewn across the line at various points the trackbed suffered severe damage along several stretches, particularly between Balsicas and Torre Pacheco in the Campo de Cartagena. In addition, security installations, electricity cables, drainage structures and other elements were all affected, but reconstruction is now complete and at the same time the branch line which leads to the port of Cartagena also reopens on Wednesday.
Elsewhere repair work continues, and it is forecast that the Lorca-Águilas line and the FEVE service which runs between Cartagena and Los Nietos on the shore of the Mar Menor will be brought back into service next week (the line is still not operative between El Estrecho and Los Nietos): when this happens all of the connections to Cartagena, which was isolated in railway terms by the flooding a month ago, will have been restored.
