ARCHIVED - Murcia-Alicante rail services resume almost a month after the gota fría flooding
The local Murcia-Cartagena and Lorca-Aguilas lines are still inoperative
Almost a month after extensive damage was done to infrastructures by the destructive flooding during the “gota fría” storm in mid-September, rail services between Murcia and Alicante at last became operational again on Thursday 10th October after much of the Vega Baja area in eastern Murcia and the south of the province of Alicante was left under water by the downpour.
The worst affected part of the line between the cities of Murcia and Alicante was the few kilometres between Orihuela and Beniel, where the River Segura burst its banks during what has been described as the worst episode of flooding in south-eastern Spain for 50 years. Ever since then passengers have been travelling on buses chartered by the rail company, but now the route is restored after extensive repair work.
At the same time, this means that long-distance services from Murcia to Valencia and Cartagena are also operative again for the first time since 21.00 on 12th September.
However, local services on the Cartagena-Murcia and Lorca-Águilas lines are still suspended, with no official date having been set for them to resume.
