ARCHIVED - France recommends against travel to Catalonia
This morning there had been renewed speculation that the border between the two countries would be closed although this was denied by the Spanish Exterior Minister earlier this week.
The French Prime Minister, Jean Castex, has strongly recommended on Friday afternoon that French nationals do not travel to Catalonia due to the outbreaks of Covid in this region of Spain.
Castex made these remarks this afternoon on a visit to Roissy Airport, after attending a Defense Council focused on the spread of the coronavirus epidemic worldwide.
“The situation in Catalonia shows degraded health indicators. We strongly recommend French citizens to avoid travelling there as long as the situation in that territory does not improve,"Castex said after the Defense Council meeting led by French President Emmanuel Macron to assess the progress of the virus in France.
Catalonia had registered 88,234 positive cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus confirmed by diagnostic test (rapid test or PCR) by Thursday since the beginning of the epidemic, 1,343 more than on Wednesday.
Castex explained that they are in contact with the Spanish and Catalan authorities to ensure that the flow of traffic between Spain and France is also limited as much as possible and controlled, particularly the interchange of migrant labourers between the two countries which has caused outbreaks in both countries.
The Prime Minister also mentioned an increase in detection capabilities at Paris airports from 2,000 to 6,000 RT-PCR tests per day at Roissy, and to 2,000 tests per day at Orly.
He also announced mandatory Covid tests for travellers coming to France from 16 countries where the Covid-19 virus is circulating strongly, including the United States and Algeria.
