ARCHIVED - 1st to 3rd November; Roman Theatre Museum Cartagena opening times and activities
The most visited museum in the region is open across the Bank Holiday weekend with special activities
Bank Holiday visiting times:
In addition to the static exhibition there are a number of guided routes which include the theatre this weekend. All of the routes are in Spanish, although the museum can be visited at any time and an English language audioguide is provided. The virtual reality tour is also available in English. See bottom of article for booking information and link to static information about the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena.
1st November: Dramatized tour, Romanos por el Mundo: Destino Carthago Nova
The tour consists of a good-humoured walk through the most important Roman remains of Cartagena in the company of various personalities who lived in the city 2,000 years ago. Tickets are priced at 14 euros per head. Departing at 12:00 from the Roman Theatre Museum.
2nd and 3rd November: Virtual reality tours
Virtual reality-enhanced tours using 3-D glasses are offered on both Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 allowing visitors to see the building as it was in its heyday 2,000 years ago and enjoy a virtual “fly-through”.
Saturday 2nd November: Cartagena Sabor Tres Culturas
Historical and gastronomic three cultures tour. Spanish language.
The route of the Tres Culturas tour concentrates first on the peaceful co-existence of Christian, Moslem and Jewish cultures in the city of Cartagena during the Middle Ages, and begins at the foot of the panoramic lift, which then carries visitors up to the highest point in the city which watches over the Bay of Cartagena, the Colina de Asclepios.
This important and strategically important site has been occupied consistently throughout the history of the city and is currently crowned by a medieval castle which is visited as part of the tour. The interior of the castle features a number of displays focusing on the confluence of the Jewish, Christian and Moslem cultures in this important port, and the commentary during the route (in Spanish, but don’t worry, the tour is highly visual!) explores their interconnection and the evidence of their presence in the historical remains unearthed in Cartagena.
From the castle the route winds down to the foot of the Colina de Asclepios, past the remains of the Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor to enter the Roman Theatre Museum, which was built into the side of the hill during the reign of Augustus, when the city was at its most splendid.
After visiting the impressive theatre itself, the route concludes with tapas based on Jewish or Muslim gastronomy (this varies from week to week throughout the schedule.)
These tours also start at 11.30, with the cost of registering to join set at 14 euros (12 euros for those qualifying for discounts.
Sunday 3rd November; Ciudadanos de un Imperio tour
This guided tour begins at the Roman Theatre Museum at 11:30 before visiting the Roman Forum District and the Casa de la Fortuna. Tickets are priced at 13 euros per head (10 euros for those who qualify for discounts).
Tickets for these activities can be purchased at the Roman Theatre Museum (tel: 968 504802 or 968 500093) or centres within the Puerto de Culturas network. Prior reservations are necessary as places are limited.
