ARCHIVED - Aquarium arks for seahorses and fan mussels facing possible extinction in the Mar Menor
The Murcia government announces 8 emergency measures at a cost of 8.25 million euros
The regional government of Murcia announced on Thursday that it has approved a budget of 8.25 million euros to finance eight “urgent measures” to protect and regenerate the Mar Menor, among them the creation of four aquariums to house specimens of endangered species of wildlife which are found in the lagoon.
One of the aquariums will be home to members of the Syngnathidae family (which includes seahorses and pipefish) and giant fan mussels, another is for species which are under threat in Murcia such as the Spanish toothcarp and the gudgeon, while one of the remaining two will be reserved as a reproduction area. The fan mussels which remain in the Mar Menor will continue to be protected, and in general this move has been welcomed by naturalists, some of whom began to demand that an “ark” for these species be created even before the rain had stopped falling during the gota fría storm in mid-September.
The immediate measures approved, which are to be implemented within a month, include the testing of oxygenation systems to combat future episodes of anoxia like the one which left tons of dead fish on the beaches of the Mar Menor in October, and more continuous monitoring systems to provide information about water quality in the lagoon.
Other measures have been allotted a timespan of 6 months, including the intensification of work to remove biomass and boats from the shore and beaches of the Mar Menor, drilling to establish whether there is good quality water in the aquifer beneath the lagoon, and the recovery of the salt marshes of Marchamalo to rehabilitate them as a refuge for certain species inhabiting the Mar Menor.
A last batch of measures is to be completed within 24 months, including the design and testing of green filters, and the creation of de-nitrification devices using citrus tree chips for water running off from the Rambla del Albujón and the Rambla de Miranda.
