A magical night of music as San Javier heralds the arrival of the month of May

April 30 Reviving the tradition of Los Mayos in San Javier

On Tuesday April 30, the Mar Menor Choir and Dance group will once again perform the ancient Murcian tradition of singing Los Mayos, joined for the first time by musicians from the San Javier Conservatory of Music. Los Mayos is an age-old fiesta centred on offering up songs to the Virgin Mary to herald the arrival of the month of May and all its bounties.

The performance will start at 7pm at the San Javier church and proceed through Santiago de la Ribera, San Cayetano and El Mirador, culminating in La Grajuela at around 11pm.

This collaboration between the choir and Conservatory aims to promote knowledge and appreciation of traditional and local music among younger generations. According to the group's manager, “the Conservatory is now mature enough to implement some folk music.”

Marisol Fernández, the president of the folklore group, encourages everyone to attend any part of the tour or follow along at the designated stops, describing it as “a very special night”.

Meanwhile, David Martínez, Councillor for Culture, highlighted San Javier’s continued support of “culture and traditions as well as our own cultural assets such as the Choirs and Dances group and the Conservatory itself.”

San Javier Tourist Offices The municipality of San Javier has three main offices giving tourist information to visitors, as well as two information points. The tourist offices are located in Santiago de la Ribera, on the ground floor of the town hall in San Javier and at the start of La Manga. There is a tourist information point located in the San Javier Airport, as well as one at kilometre 12-13 of La Manga del Mar Menor.

Due to its location on the fringes of the Mar Menor and Mediterranean, San Javier has a period of intense summer tourism activity during the peak summer months, although it is popular with retirees of all nationalities out of peak season.

Tickets for the annual San Javier Jazz Festival can be purchased at the Festival office in San Javier Town Hall, Plaza de España.
