ARCHIVED - Another heatwave to hit Murcia and the rest of Spain this week
Temperatures could reach up to 42ºC across the Iberian Peninsula and Murcia is in for a scorching weekend
Image shows forecast for July 23 in the Region of Murcia
After this weekend’s relatively pleasant temperatures, a new heat wave is due to reach Spain in the next few days, with an exceptional rise in temperatures on Thursday (July 22) and Friday (July 23).
The cause of the heatwave is the arrival mass of warm air from the North of Africa, which will reach the Iberian Peninsula on Wednesday, July 20, when the temperature is set to rise slightly in the Region of Murcia, ranging between 35 and 28 degrees, with a steady eastern breeze later in the afternoon.
Inland, the temperatures are forecast to reach 35ºC, and, in some places such as Córdoba, Toledo and Zaragoza, they could even rise as high as 40º.
Another weather phenomenon, a cold isolated storm from the Atlantic, is also going to draw warm air towards the peninsula on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures reaching up to 42ºC in some parts of Spain.
The temperatures are expected to be slightly less extreme in Murcia on Thursday; high 30s across the region. However, on Friday, as the mass of air travels east, temperatures could reach 42º in the Region of Murcia, as well as in Granada and the precoastal areas of Valencia.
The Atlantic storm will cross the Cantabrian sea over the weekend, leaving behind showers and storms in the north and east of Spain and lowering the temperatures slightly.
However, the same cannot be said for the Region of Murcia, as the Aemet (Spanish state weather agency) forecast predicts temperatures of over 40º on Saturday (July 24) and around 37º on Sunday (July 25).
This summer’s higher temperatures and frequent heatwaves were predicted in a report by Aemet in June, which stated that the southernmost areas of Spain can expect a hotter summer than usual this year.
