AnimaNaturalis protest against fur trade in Barcelona
These bodies coated in blood represent some of the 60 million animals slaughtered for their fur every year
A stark and brutal protest against the cruelty of harnessing animal pelts for fur took place in the centre of Barcelona at the weekend, with nearly 50 activists from AnimaNaturalis portraying what they call “the cruel reality of the fur trade. “
The 50 activists set up a cage in the centre of the plaza Sant Jaume de Barcelona, and created a scenario to portray the suffering of the millions of animals who are slaughtered each year for fur. Each activist was naked, their bodies coated in blood, lying immobile in a pile of stripped bodies for 45 minutes, their bodies representing the corpses of some of the 60 million animals who die every year to satisfy the demands of the fur trade.
Minks, ferrets, foxes, rabbits, seals, otters, cows, chinchillas, and in China even dogs and cats are part of the broad group of animals slaughtered for their fur, some of them left alive to die after the fur has been cut and ripped from their bodies. The cruelty suffered by some of these animals is beyond comprehension and for what?
So that we can wear furs which can easily be simulated by synthetic products available in the market today.
“We just want consumers to be aware of the terrible suffering which is behind this trade. These days there is no need to rip the skins off these animals to make garments when there are so many more ethical products available, “ explained Aïda Gascón, director of AnimaNaturalis in Spain.
This is the ninth such campaign organised by the group, who hope that it may make some consumers think twice before buying any product which uses natural fur this Christmas.
The poster being held by the protestor at the front, says" how many lives for a coat?"
