ARCHIVED - Amazon plant in Corvera to contract the services of 200 drivers
The plant is expected to open at the end of summer 2020
The giant e-commerce and digital streaming company Amazon, one of the “Big Four” tech companies along with Facebook Apple and Google, has announced that its logistical plant in the “Parque Logístico del Sureste”, alongside the Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera, will be up and running at the end of this summer.
At the plant itself the company will be employing 30 or more people, but at the same time the opening of the distribution and logistics centre will imply the taking on of over 200 drivers. Amazon will be working in collaboration with five independent delivery companies in order to guarantee rapid delivery, operating from the new premises which will occupy a floor area of around 17,000 square metres.
John Tagawa, the vice-president of Amazon Logistics in Europe, explains that the company brings over 20 years of experience, technological know-how and investment to the Region of Murcia to create numerous job opportunities, while the Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, underlines the importance of the boost to the local economy which the opening of the plant will bring.
Amazon’s logistics operation in Spain began with the opening of the centre in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) in 2012, since when four more main hubs have been created in El Prat, Martorelles and Castellbisbal (all in Barcelona) and Illescas (Toledo). Two more establishments in central areas of Madrid and Barcelona have also been opened, along with distribution centres in Getafe (Madrid) and Barberá del Vallés (Barcelona) and other logistical centres throughout the country including those in Paterna (province of Valencia), Málaga, Sevilla, Bilbao and Pontevedra.
Last year Amazon created 2,200 new jobs in Spain, bringing the number of people employed by the company in this country to 7,000.
