ARCHIVED - Alicante-Elche airport reopening progressively on Tuesday
107 flights were re-routed to Corvera from Alicante and Valencia on Monday
Monday 20th January saw the record for air traffic at the Region of Murcia International Airport in Corvera broken again as well over 100 flights were re-directed from the airports of Alicante-Elche and Valencia due to Storm Gloria bringing even worse conditions to the Costa Blanca and the Comunidad than to the Costa Cálida.
A total of 107 flights (51 arrivals and 56 departures) were re-routed to Corvera during the day and the airport remained open until 1 o’clock in the morning to deal with the extra flights and passengers. Almost all of the re-scheduled services were transferred from Alicante-Elche with just two coming from Valencia, as the Costa Blanca airport remained closed all day after flights there were suspended at 13.00 on Sunday.
Staff at the airport pulled out all the stops to handle the unexpected volume of flights, extra personnel drafted in from Alicante assisiting with the herculean task of minimising disruption for passengers.
This follows another boost for passenger numbers at Corvera last week, when a fire in the terminal building at Alicante-Elche closed the airport for 24 hours.
Aena’s intention on Tuesday is for operations at Alicante-Elche to gradually return to normal, with flights having resumed from 5am in the morning, but with torrential rain and snow persisting on Tuesday morning anyone scheduled to fly into or out of the Costa Blanca and the Costa Cálida, or meeting passengers on flights at the airport should check the status of their flights with their airline before setting out for the terminal.
