Alicante speed cameras nab over 15,000 drivers but make roads safer
New radars on key avenues cut average speeds and violations by more than half in first nine months
Alicante's new speed cameras have been busy since they switched on, catching 15,074 drivers going over the 50 km/h limit across the city's main roads in their first nine months from 17 January to 17 October. This comes as the DGT prepares average speed section controls on nearby A-7 and A-31 routes. But the real win, according to the Urban Mobility Department, is how they've slowed things down overall, making streets safer, quieter and cleaner.Councillor Carlos de Juan is pleased with the results. "The trend in the reduction of vehicle speed on these access roads to the city is maintained compared to the previous 20-day trial period before its entry into operation, in which an average of 134.5 violations were recorded daily, while in these nine months this average stands at 55.2," he said. That's about 55 fines a day now, down from 134 during testing, with average speeds dropping below 50 km/h on avenues like Denia, Elche, Caja de Ahorros and Villajoyosa.
The busiest spot? Vistahermosa on Denia Avenue, with 9,448 fines, followed by Elche Avenue at 4,319, Caja de Ahorros near the Santo Ángel de la Guarda Special Education Center with 656, and Villajoyosa Avenue with 651. De Juan added, "In an initial assessment of the radars' performance in these new months, there is evidence of a general maintenance in reducing speed below the established limits of 50 km/h and, therefore, an improvement in road safety, a reduction in the risk of accidents and air quality, in addition to lowering noise pollution."
These multi-lane Doppler cameras, bought from Smartpol Gestión SL for €290,673.77 back in September 2024, are interchangeable and sit on poles at key spots. Alicante now has nine such poles ready for them, including extras on Denia, Caja de Ahorros and Villajoyosa, plus fixed ones on Elche, Universidad, La Goteta, La Goleta and near Playa San Juan.
For drivers, it's a nudge to ease off the accelerator, but the payoff is streets where everyone feels safer. If you're zipping through Alicante, those cameras are watching – and clearly making a difference.
