ARCHIVED - A million Covid vaccines have been administered in the Region of Murcia
Over 40 per cent of the jabs have been in the last month as the immunization campaign builds momentum
A significant milestone was reached in the coronavirus immunization campaign in the Region of Murcia this week as the number of vaccine doses administered to the population passed one million, marking another step in the bid to halt the spread of Covid and protect the Costa Cálida.
The latest Ministry of Health update published on Thursday evening reports that a total of 1,018,736 doses of Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen vaccines have now been injected in Murcia, including 428,510 in the last month alone as the campaign picked up momentum following a stuttering start earlier in the year. The Region has administered 91.3 per cent of the doses distributed by the national Ministry, not far short of the national average of 92.7 per cent, and as a result 44.2 per cent of the population have received at least one vaccine dose – slightly below the national figure of 47.2 per cent.
At the same time, over a quarter of the population of just over 1.5 million in Murcia are fully vaccinated – including those given the mono-dose Janssen vaccine – and across the whole country it now seems that the target of immunizing 70 per cent of the population is within reach.
As mass vaccination progresses through different age groups as many as 91.8 per cent of those in their 50s have received the first vaccine dose (and 57 per cent the second), while 54 per cent of those in their 40s have already been given the first jab. In this context the start of the campaign among 30-somethings is imminent and is set to be undertaken when the figure for the 40-49-year-old reaches 60 per cent.
Further good news is that the SMS regional health service is set to receive more doses next week than in any other so far, including 86,560 Pfizer, 9,800 Moderna and 16,300 AstraZeneca: these follow the arrival of 4,100 more Janssen doses on Thursday.
Although the coronavirus incidence rate in the Region of Murcia has stagnated in recent days the improving data continue to reflect the effects of the vaccination campaign. Fewer than 499 Covid cases are known to be active and the number of patients currently receiving hospital treatment continues to fall.
Only 9 are in intensive care units, the lowest figure since early last August, and no further Covid-related fatalities have been reported for the last 5 days.
