ARCHIVED - 83 per cent of new Covid diagnoses in Spain have not been vaccinated
Spain’s Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, says that 83 per cent of people diagnosed with Covid in the past five weeks have not been vaccinated
As cumulative incidence rates continue to rise throughout the country, the Spanish Health Minister has reiterated the need for the vaccination campaign to keep up its momentum, as recent data shows that the vast majority of people who have tested positive in the past 5 weeks hadn’t yet been vaccinated against Covid.
Speaking at a press conference at the Palacio del Moncloa, the minister revealed that in the last few weeks, 83 per cent of those infected by Covid were not vaccinated, 11 per cent had a single dose and only 5.5 per cent have been fully vaccinated. She added that the latest wave of coronavirus is hitting “the group of 12 to 29 years” particularly hard. In this age range, only 13 per cent have been fully vaccinated with 26.4 per cent having had at least one dose.
“Herd immunity is essential,” she stressed.
To date, more than half the Spanish population – 24.1 million people – have received both jabs, placing Spain in the top three nations in the European Union vaccination race. However, the campaign cannot afford to lose steam if the objective set by the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, to have 70 per cent of the population vaccinated by the end of August, is to be met.
Asked about complaints of nationwide shortages of the Pfizer jab, the minister insisted that all doses arriving into Madrid are distributed promptly and fairly to the various autonomous communities, recalling that recently, of the 7.6 million Pfizer jabs received, 6.9 million were delivered to the communities with the worst vaccination rates.
