ARCHIVED - 775 cases and six deaths; Record number of new cases for Murcia Region in the last 24 hours
There are now 9,670 active cases across the region
The last few days have been depressing to say the least, watching the number of covid cases rising all over Europe with a deep sense of inevitability and frustration.
Here in Murcia the pandemic is intensifying as it is in the UK and other European countries; last night the Dutch and German authorities reached an agreement to send covid patients requiring intensive care from Holland to Germany due to the shortage of resources to cope with what is being described as a “tsunami” of cases in Holland, a nationwide curfew was imposed in France which day after day reports its highest figures ever, Portugal imposed an order to prevent inter-municipal movement ahead of the All Saints holiday next weekend, Belgium reported its worst figures ever and businesses called for a total lockdown now in order to try and save the Christmas shopping campaign in December…….we’re surrounded on all sides and the same situation exists within Spain.

Today the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez spoke to the nation, warning that the situation is serious and calling for unity, saying “To contain the contagions we must reduce mobility and social contacts, there is no other way," and "the situation is serious, and we must all act with determination, individual discipline and remain united in the face of the virus. The goal is to contain the pandemic and defeat the second wave."
There’s no getting away from covid; although it’s safe and a real joy at the moment to walk along the beaches in this glorious autumn weather, and bars and coastal café´s are empty, we have to take especial care as realistically we now have 9,670 active cases which have been detected in the Region of Murcia, the positive PCR test results exceeding a rate of 15%, which means that there are many hundreds and probably thousands of positive cases walking around in the region, (and the rest of Spain) which remain undetected but are still contagious, so although there is NO NEED TO PANIC there is a need to be aware and a little cautious in potential contact situations.
In the last 24 hours the testers have detected 775 new cases of covid in the Murcia Region, spread right around the 45 municipalities, which is another record high; the last record set a week ago being 716.
Of the 775 new cases, 252 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, which also reaches a new record with the figure for today, 69 to Cartagena, 54 to Lorca, 48 to Villanueva, 32 to Totana, 24 to Alcantarilla, 21 to Molina de Segura, 19 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 18 to Cieza, 17 to Mazarrón, 17 to San Javier, 17 to Torre Pacheco, 15 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 15 to Jumilla, 14 to Fuente Álamo, 13 to Archena, 12 to Mula, 11 to Beniel, 11 to Yecla, 10 to Alhama de Murcia, 9 to Bullas, 9 to Puerto Lumbreras , 8 to Cehegín, 7 to Los Alcázares, 6 to Lorquí, 6 to San Pedro del Pinatar, and 6 to Santomera. The remainder are distributed among various locations.
To date a total of 31,378 cases have been detected in the region since the pandemic began.
Accumulated incidence rate:
The rate per 100,000 of population has increased to 286 across the Murcia Region for 7 days and 502 for 14 days. The worst affected municipality is Villanueva del Río Segura with a rate of 1855 (although it only has 2910 inhabitants), followed by Beniel with 645, Fortuna with 583 and Totana with 565. There are 18 municipalities with IA rates exceeding the regional average. The most worrying figures are those of Murcia city due to the sheer size of the population, which is nearly half a million. The capital now has an IA rate of 304 over 7 days and 510 over 14.
Number of new cases in the last 7 days:
By municipality on Wednesday: Note, the first figure shown is the actual number of cases diagnosed in the last 7 days, the second is the IA rate for the last 7 days (number of cases per 100,000 of population): In brackets the number of cases is indicated as either a positive or negative compared to the situation last Wednesday when this breakdown was last published, taking into consideration that patients are recovering and being removed from the list all the time)
Abanilla 17/277 (-13) ( This means 17 cases in the last 7 days and an IA rate of 277, so just below average, with 13 less cases since the last figures were published on Wednesday)

Fatalities
Six fatalities have been reported within the last 24 hours; two males and four females aged 73, 73, 76, 79, 83 and 83, two from Murcia, and one each from San Pedro del Pinatar, Cehegín, Cieza and Águilas. Their deaths bring the total number of fatalities to date up to 281.
Recoveries. The total number of recovered patients has today reached 19,721, so is very likely to pass the 20,000 mark by tomorrow; at least a little good news!
Hospitalisations:
The number of patients hospitalised has risen by six patients to 418, another record high, with 77 patients in intensive care, the same total as yesterday.
Today the Murcian regional government has sought judicial approval to impose a curfew between 11pm and 6am and close all bars at 10pm. The government hopes that this can be imposed rapidly to try and stem the increase in new cases.
