ARCHIVED - 450 more businesses in Murcia apply for ERTE furlough schemes after the closure of the hostelry sector
1,500 workers affected, most of them thought to be bar and restaurant staff
The prolongation of ERTE furlough schemes in Spain until at least 31st May, which has finally met with the approval of both employers and trades unions this week, will affect approximately 450 new applications from businesses in the Region of Murcia which have been submitted mostly as a result of the majority of bars and restaurants being forced to close down during the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
It is estimated by the regional government that around 1,500 employees are affected by these new ERTEs, having been made redundant by the need to eliminate social gatherings in hostelries as Covid case numbers reach new highs in Murcia. The terms of the prolongation of the ERTE schemes mean that their jobs and income are protected for six months, and those newly on furlough join the 12,000 or so who were already in a similar position at the end of last year.
Since the pandemic first reached Murcia almost a year ago a total of 18,151 ERTEs have been presented in the Region, affecting 98,541 people, and while 86 per cent of the applications have been processed the CCOO union claims that the recent surge is leading to delays in the procedure.
