ARCHIVED - 35,878 new Covid cases and 201 more deaths in Spain on Thursday
Hospital and intensive care patient numbers continue to increase alarmingly
The latest daily coronavirus update published on Thursday by Spain’s Ministry of Health reports a further 35,878 confirmed cases of Covid, the second highest figure so far after the 39,000 added to the total the day before, while incidence rates continue to rise alarmingly.
The 14-day accumulated incidence rate across the country now stands at 522 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, just 7 short of the peak reached in early November, and at the same time a further 201 Covid sufferers are reported to have died. The official death toll as reported by the Ministry has now reached 53,079 (although the number of deaths from all causes since March last year suggests that the “real figure” may be almost 40 per cent higher), and the number of confirmed cases has climbed to over 2.2 million.
The regional breakdown of the latest data shows that the 14 day incidence rates are highest in Extremadura (1,167), Murcia (761) and La Rioja (719), while at the other end of the scale only Asturias (235) and the Canaries (161) remain below the “extreme risk” threshold of 250.
Equally worrying are the figures regarding the strain being placed on health services across the country, with the number of Covid patients receiving hospital treatment having risen to 18,924. Among them are 2,849 in intensive care, and the number of new admissions continues to exceed the number of people discharged (2,700 and 1,949 respectively in yesterday’s data).
15.14 per cent of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients and the proportion is as high as 28.46 per cent in intensive care units.
Of the 223,491 Covid patients who have been admitted to hospital in the last 10 months as many as 4,190 have been in the last week alone, including 628 in Andalucía, 288 in Aragón, 160 in Asturias, 80 in the Balearics, 104 in the Canaries, 114 in Cantabria, 144 in Castilla-La Mancha, 398 in Castilla y León, 303 in Catalunya, 3 in Ceuta, 734 in the Comunidad Valenciana, 251 in Extremadura, 369 in Galicia, 122 in Madrid, 9 in Melilla, 346 in Murcia, 53 in Navarra, 2 in the Basque Country and 82 in La Rioja.
The 330 admissions to intensive care in the last seven days bring the total since March up to 19,372, and include 32 in Andalucía, 16 in Aragón, 6 in Asturias, 15 in the Balearics, 8 in the Canaries, 13 in Cantabria, 12 in Castilla-La Mancha, 19 in Castilla y León, 17 in Catalunya, 1 in Ceuta, 37 in the Comunidad Valenciana, 21 in Extremadura, 62 in Galicia, 13 in Madrid, 5 in Melilla, 39 in Murcia, 5 in Navarra and 9 in La Rioja.
