ARCHIVED - 3,000 Murcia lorries caught up in Catalan separatist motorway blockades
Fears that buyers in northern Europe could turn to suppliers in Italy and Greece if disruption continues
The disruption caused by Catalan separatist agitators and demonstrators on the AP-7 motorway, which leads along the Mediterranean coast of Spain to Catalunya and France, has caused considerable frustration and resentment among those working in the transport sector in the Region of Murcia as their efforts to deliver fresh fruit and vegetables from the Costa Cálida to northern Europe are frustrated.
According to the transport workers’ federation Froet, 3,000 lorry drivers from Murcia have been trapped by the demonstrators’ blockades and barricades on major roads, with an economic cost to each of between 350 and 500 euros per vehicle per day. The Murcianos were among 20,000 HGVs whose journeys have been interrupted by the disturbances since the weekend, and while the total effect on the sector in Spain has risen to over 10 million euros companies from Murcia have been hit to the tune of around 1.5 million, according to the general secretary of Froet, Manuel Perezcarro.
In addition, these calculations do not take into account any produce which is rejected by the purchaser on reaching its destination due to it having been spoilt during the extended journey time.
In the long term the drivers fear that continued disruption of this kind could cause redundancies and are calling on the national government to take strong action in order to ensure that the disturbances do not continue. If this is not forthcoming, they warn, buyers in northern Europe could soon be purchasing from alternative sources in Italy and Greece, and Sr Perezcarro says that it is intolerable that just a couple of hundred demonstrators should be allowed to prevent the smooth running of international trade.
