ARCHIVED - 30 reported for breaking lockdown at Palm Sunday Mass in Murcia
Each attendee could be fined up to 3,000 euros
Holy Week or Semana Santa is now under way in Murcia and throughout Spain, with all processions and religious ceremonies cancelled unless they are held by video conference, but the local police in the city of Murcia found themselves obliged to break up a Mass which was being held at an evangelical church in the south of the regional capital to commemorate Palm Sunday on 5th April.
Around 30 people were attending the event but their activities were reported to the authorities by neighbours living close to the church in Calle Actor José Crespo, and after the police had taken their names and ID numbers they left the building carrying their olive branches and palm fronds (the gesture shown by the Jews to Christ as he made his triumphant entrance into Jerusalem). Each will now face a fine of between 600 and 3,000 euros while the owner of the premises could be punished to the tune of up to 600,000 euros, although no arrests were made.
In response to the coronavirus emergency the Catholic church, and Bishop José Manuel Lorca Planes of Cartagena, have urged believers to watch Holy Mass on television, while those missing the Semana Santa processions are being encouraged in Lorca and Cartagena to dress up in their uniforms and take to their balconies. Others are broadcasting the marches usually played during processions from their balconies and still more are decorating the exterior of their homes with the banners and emblems of the different brotherhoods which take part.
But of course the celebrations are more muted than any since the Civil War, and if the situation allows it can be assumed that the Easter celebrations of 2021 will be especially welcome in the Costa Cálida and throughout Spain!

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
