ARCHIVED - 3.9 earth tremor with epicenter in Caravaca felt in several municipalities
Monday got off to a shaky start for residents in the north-west of the region
An earthquake of 3.9 magnitude on the Richter scale occurred this morning in the Region of Murcia at a depth of 4 kilometres below the surface, with its epicenter in the municipality of Caravaca de la Cruz.
According to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the earthquake took place at 01:46 in the morning and was felt not only in Caravaca de la Cruz, but also in Lorca, Bullas, Mula, Moratalla, in Ensanche-Armajal de Cartagena, Yecla and Cehegín.
The 112 Emergency Coordination Center received 17 calls from residents of these areas who felt the ground move and alerted 112.
No material damage has been reported and there were no casualties.
Several aftershocks ranging between 1.5 and 2.1 with epicenters in Cehegín and Caravaca have since been reported, the last at just after half eight this morning.
The epicentre was out in the countryside not far from the Lorca border and the village of La Paca, a seismically active "hotpoint" which has itself been at the centre of several major tremors over the years.
