ARCHIVED - 238 illegal migrants storm the Spanish border in Melilla
Jubilant migrants waved their grappling hooks in triumph as they made their way to the CETI detention centre
It is reported that a group of 238 unauthorized migrants succeeded in reaching EU territory in the north African Spanish enclave of Melilla on Thursday morning, clambering over the barbed wire border fences using grappling hooks to scale the 6-metre barriers intended to keep them out.

This is one of the largest mass assaults on the border fences of Melilla in recent years, and took place when around 300 people rushed at the fences at approximately 6.50 in the morning. Not all of them made it across the frontier, but most of those who did rushed to the CETI temporary migrant centre, some of their injured companions taking a little longer to reach their destination after awaiting their chance for months on the Moroccan side of the border. On arrival they were placed in quarantine in order to prevent possible coronavirus infection.
This is the third mass assault in recent weeks, following the arrival of groups of 119 migrants on 12th July and another 20 two days later, and once again the “Jucil” association representing officers of the Guardia Civil bemoaned the lack of support given to those manning the fence. During the previous incidents violence was directed at officers who attempted to detain the new arrivals, with migrants using iron bars and throwing stones and causing injury to seven of them.
The latest wave of migrants timed their attack to coincide with the Islamic feast day of Eid-el-Adha, which will last until Friday: this tends to lead to there being less police presence on the Moroccan side of the border.
