ARCHIVED - 16 shopping days on Sundays and public holidays in Murcia in 2020
Other regions in Spain already allow unlimited Sunday opening
It has been decided by the regional government of Murcia that in 2020 the number of Sundays and public holidays on which shops will be allowed to open will remain at 16.
According to Carolina Espinosa, the head of the Department of Commerce, Consumerism and Artisanship, the opening of retail outlets on Sundays and holidays helps to increase activity, employment and sales on dates close to Christmas, Easter, Saint Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, as well as during the annual summer and winter sales. For this reason shops will be allowed to open on two or three Sundays and public holidays every month next year apart from February, although this still falls short of the freedom of opening hours which has been established in other regions of Spain, such as Madrid.
At present the “extra” shopping days proposed for 2020 are 5th and 12th January (due to the proximity to Three Kings Day), 15th March (just before Father’s Day), 9th April (Easter), 3rd May (Mother’s Day), 28th June, 5th July, 15th August, 12th October, 29th November and 6th, 7th, 8th, 13th, 20th and 27th December.
In the meantime, full opening hours will be permitted as this year draws to a close on 24th November and 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th December.
NOTE: in coastal areas and zones deemed to be of tourist interest the rules regarding Sunday trading are relaxed, hence the permission granted to the Espacio Mediterráneo mall in Cartagena to open 365 days a year.
