ARCHIVED - 16 fatalities as Spain records lowest weekend Covid death toll for 11 months
Incidence rates in Spain continue to decline as the vaccination campaign progresses
Optimism continues to grow regarding the development of the coronavirus pandemic in Spain, despite an increase in the number of young adults testing positive as socializing restrictions are gradually lifted, and the latest update published by the national government on Monday 14th June provides positive news regarding all of the major indicators measuring the extent of coronavirus in this country.
Arguably the most important figure is that the official pandemic death toll rose by just 16, the lowest weekend figure since 27th July last year, to 80,517, but other important statistics are also indicative of how the vaccination campaign is affecting the situation in Spain.
The nationwide 14-day incidence rate continued its decline over the weekend and now stands at 104.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and although there is still some variation among the different regions the differences are becoming less marked. The highest rates are now reported in Andalucía (185), La Rioja (181), the Basque Country (148) and Navarra (121), all of them in medium or high risk territory, while at the other end of the scale the risk of infection is classified as low in the Balearics (40.3), the Comunidad Valenciana (40.9), Galicia (42.4), Ceuta (45.1) and Murcia (48.4).
Meanwhile, the number of Covid patients receiving hospital treatment has fallen from 4,100 to 3,414 over the last week, accounting for 2.77 per cent of occupied hospital beds, while the equivalent figure in intensive care units has dropped from 11.8 per cent to 9.69 per cent - although it is still above 20 per cent in the region of Madrid (26.5%), in Extremadura this indicator is down to 0.48 per cent, with just one patient, and there only two in this category in the Balearics.
