ARCHIVED - 13,873 cases of coronavirus and 218 deaths in Spain on Tuesday 20th October
Spain has now reported 988,322 cases and is likely to pass the million cases mark on Wednesday
The Spanish Ministry of Health has reported 13,873 new positives for coronavirus on Tuesday 20th October, on a day that becomes, again, the worst Tuesday in terms of the number of new infections during the entire second wave.
The rest of the indicators that reflect the evolution of the epidemic have also yielded bad results and as is also the case across much of Europe, case numbers are continuing to rise, as are other indicators: hospitalizations continue to grow, the number of deaths reported per day remain above 200, and the accumulated incidence rate per 100,000 of the population is increasing.

It is highly likely that by Wednesday evening Spain will have officially passed the one million confirmed cases mark since the pandemic began, the total on Tuesday afternoon now officially 988,322 confirmed cases (tested by PCR) since the pandemic began.
As was the case on Monday, the two autonomous regions which notified the most new positives are Catalonia (2,692 cases) and Andalusia (2,534), followed by the Community of Madrid (1,742) and the Valencian Community (1,318). In the latter, the incidence over 14 days has shot up by 14.6% compared to the previous day, a growth much higher than the average, which stood at 3.4%, a worrying situation for the Valencian Government which has consistently reported some of the lowest figures in the country. On Tuesday afternoon the regional president said that he was considering imposing a curfew in the region regardless of whether this was agreed as a national measure, due to the growing rate of cases amongst the student population in the region following a major outbreak due to a party at Valencia University.
On average, 322.94 cases per 100,000 inhabitants have been registered in Spain in the last two weeks, with Navarra -which becomes the first region to pass the 1,000 barrier (1,002.73) reporting the highest rate, followed by La Rioja (549.56), Aragón (542.94) and Castilla y León (503.02), all above 500.

Fatalities:
The number of daily deaths has once again exceeded 200 deaths after 218 deaths were reported for the last 24 hour period, a figure that has raised the official total for the entire pandemic to 34,210. However, as the graph above clearly shows, the number of deaths remains considerably lower than during the first wave.
Hospitalisations:
The number of patients admitted to Spanish hopitals with covid has increased again on Tuesday to 13,288 (343 more than on Monday), which represents an average occupation of 11% of the beds available. Since October 12th, the number of covid patients admitted has not stopped growing and has increased by 3,179 (31.4% more than a week ago).
The situation in the intensive care units is not much better. 1,911 patients are currently admitted with Covid in intensive care beds throughout the country, with an average occupancy of 21.5%. If compared to the situation on October 12th, there are 365 people more in intensive care (23.6% ).
By region:
Each autonomous community produces its own daily information which does differ from the figures published by the Ministry as the system of data input and verification does cause some delays in the Ministry system, which is why the media tend to follow the overall daily total as being a more faithful reflection of the number of cases in Spain.
According to the press releases published by the regional governments themselves, Catalonia and Andalusia have both exceeded their previous record level of daily deaths, while the Valencian Community has set a new daily record for positive cases.
In Catalonia, where the Generalitat has reported 2,897 new cases and 51 deaths for the last 24 hour period, the risk of regrowth continues to increase, shown clearly in the accumulated incidence rate which has increased by 42% compared to last Tuesday and has now reached the figure of 374.22 cases per 100,000 inhabitants for the last 14 days.
In Andalusia, the Junta has reported 2,412 new positives and 42 more deaths throughout the region for the last 24 hour period. The 42 deaths this Tuesday exceed the previous daily maximum of the second wave established just a week ago, while the number of cases detected this Tuesday is the fourth highest. By provinces, Granada (685) and Seville (653) have accounted for almost half of the infections.
The Valencian Community (includes Alicante province) has notified 1,318 new positives, its highest number in the entire pandemic so far, and five deaths. Most of the new cases come from the province of Valencia (816), followed by Alicante (377) and Castellón (125). Despite the high figure, the region has the fourth lowest incidence in the entire country with 132.68 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Finally, the Community of Madrid, which remains confined under a state of emergency, has communicated 1,900 positives - of which 920 have been diagnosed in the last 24 hours - and 36 deaths. The trend in hospitalizations in the region is contrary to that of the rest of the country. If compared to the situation on October 1st, there are currently 450 fewer admitted. In that same period of time, 2,433 more people have been hospitalized throughout Spain.
