ARCHIVED - 13 million litres of water containing agricultural nutrients reach the Mar Menor every day
The figure is quoted by the president of the Murcia government as he promises budget commitment to the lagoon
Fernando López Miras, the president of the regional government of Murcia, promised on Thursday that the budget for 2020 will reflect a full commitment to saving, regenerating and protecting the marine environment of the Mar Menor to a degree which has not been seen since the aftermath of the earthquakes which caused widespread destruction and damage in Lorca in 2011.
This follows the recent acceleration in the rate at which the water quality is deteriorating, sparked by the gota fría flooding of September but caused in the long term by the contamination of runoff water by various substances, most of them originating in the crop fields of the Campo de Cartagena.
According to Sr López Miras 13 million litres of water containing agricultural nutrients are reaching the Mar Menor every day, and although he was unable to refrain from blaming the situation on the “neglect of duty” of the national government he stated that the regional budget would be strongly weighted towards addressing the issue. At the same time he called upon all of the 45 Town Halls of the Region to show understanding towards this matter being given priority, adding that each regional government department will have budgets allocated to the Mar Menor and that a specific annex will be added to the general budget.
