ARCHIVED - 12th to 26th January, Fiestas of San Antonio Abad in Santa Rosalia Torre Pacheco
The blessing of animals, a classic car rally, a charity walk and a romería as well as plenty to eat and drink just outside Mar Menor Golf Resort
The small village of Santa Rosalia, which lies within the municipality of Torre Pacheco very close to the Mar Menor Golf Resort, holds its annual fiestas in honour of San Anton Abad (Anthony the Great in English) every January, including the traditional blessing of animals associated with the patron saint of a startling variety of aspects of life including animals, skin diseases, farmers, butchers, basket makers, brushmakers and gravediggers!
This year the blessing takes place on Sunday 19th January, two days after the feast day of the saint, and the full program of the fiestas is as follows:
Sunday 12th January – the 8th annual classic cars and motorbikes rally
9.00: Registration opens, two free breakfasts per participating vehicle. At the same the bar and café open and begin preparing large bread and “sobrasada” paste sandwiches at 2 euros each.
10.00: Bouncy castles open for children outside the Centro Social El Casino.
10.00: A country meal of migas with melon is served at 2 euros per portion.
12.00: Prize-giving ceremony.
12.45: Prize draws are held.
17.00: Another prize draw is held with proceeds going to charity.
Wednesday 15th January
21.00: Cold buffet dinner at the Centro Social El Casino prior to the first round of the annual “chinitos” competition.
Thursday 16th January
22.00: Final of the annual “chinitos” competition at the Centro Social El Casino.
Friday 17th January
17.00: Traditional “rollos de San Antón” are baked at the Panadería José María Marín Castejón at Calle Moratalla 2, Las Lomas del Rame, with all residents and locals welcome to join in.
Saturday 18th January
16.00: Grand caliche (pétanque) competition outside the Centro Social El Casino.
Sunday 19th January
11.00: The big day of the 2020 fiestas gets under way with a “romería” on horseback based in Calle Real opposite Plaza El Iryda. This year an attempt is being made to re-establish the traditional event, and anyone taking part is invited to a hearty free breakfast afterwards, as well as being automatically entered into a prize draw for a ham.
12.00: A traditional “misa huertana” (sung mass) at the church of Santa Rosalía with the choir of the Coros y Danzas Virgen del Rosario of Torre Pacheco, followed by the blessing of the animals the and handing out of the rolls of San Antón which have been blessed previously.
13.00: Children’s games.
16.00: Grand carrera de cintas en bicicletas for children, a game in which youngsters attempt to ride a bicycle and hook a ribbon over a pole using a stick, without falling off!
17.00: Prize draw.
17.00: Magic show for the youngsters with the magician Abel Magia at the Centro Social El Casino.
18.00: Another prize draw is held with proceeds going to charity.
Sunday 26th January – the second annual charity walk to raise funds for the Fundación Prometeo, which promotes the integration of the disabled into local society and activities
9.00: Registration begins in Calle Real opposite Plaza El Iryda. Children 3 euros, adults 5 euros. Also at fiestassantarosalia@gmail.com.
12.00: The walk itself begins, starting in Calle Real.
13.00: A free aperitif for all participants.
13.30: Draw for prizes donated by local businesses.
