The 16-year-old fell ill last Wednesday and died in hospital on Friday
The health service of the Region of Murcia (SMS) has announced that during this week anti-meningitis vaccinations will be administered to 120 people who are known to have been in contact with a 16-year-old girl who died from the condition on Friday in the hospital of La Arrixaca, as a precaution in order to prevent the spread of the disease.
The victim was a resident of La Palma in the municipality of Cartagena, where she attended the Carthago Spartaria secondary school, and those who are to receive doses of the vaccine are friends, relatives, classmates and teachers. At the same time a protocol to avoid the spread of the contagious disease was implemented on Friday in La Palma while the Health department of the regional government urged the local population to remain calm.
It is reported that the victim was still well enough to attend school last Wednesday before visiting her doctor on Thursday and being admitted to hospital. Her death has deeply upset the residents in the small community of La Palma as well as those who accompanied her twice a week to the municipal swimming pool in Pozo Estrecho.
The main symptoms associated with the onset of meningitis are a high temperature, headaches, stiffness of the neck and, on occasion, nausea, vomiting and a confused state of mind. It is important that antibiotic treatment should be prescribed as soon as possible, and anyone suffering these symptoms should consult a doctor immediately.
