ARCHIVED - 11 deaths,903 new covid-19 cases in Murcia; Saturday 31st October
There have been more deaths in the “new normal” here in Murcia since 20th June than during the whole of the first wave of the pandemic
This week has been charged with emotion and stress, which boiled over into violent clashes between protestors and police last night in several Spanish cities but the figures presented by the national Ministry of Health yesterday, showing 25,595 new cases in Spain for the 24 hour period of Thursday-Friday, the highest number of a single day in Spain since the pandemic began in February, could be seen as justification for the preventative measures which have been put in place this week.
The authorities have done everything except lock us all down to try and ensure that this weekend families respect their requests NOT to gather socially and to try to limit the numbers gathering at the cemeteries for All Saints and All Souls, but we know from the overnight traffic figures leaving Madrid that requests have been ignored and there are still many people willing to risk the lives of their families for a beer with their friends; as one of the hospital directors wryly remarked, "in two weeks we will see the fruits of this weekend's festivities when they arrive in hospital admissions."
It’s worth pointing out that the total number of new cases notifed this week by the Spanish Health Ministry is 139,546 and the fatalities total has increased by 1126 this week. If you are amongst those who consistently call these figures fake news, please feel free to have a look at the official daily bulletin produced by the Ministry which shows where the figures come from, but bear in mind that the figures of new cases in the last 24 hours don´t match the total figures as the health authority insists on double checking all of the figures reported by the regional health authorities before it enters them into the system, so there is always a delay in the one column of these figures.
The regional authorities produce their own local figures which they then submit to the Ministry for verification and the visuals on this report come directly from the information provided for the media daily by the regional government.
Murcia has had a difficult week, breaking several records on an almost daily basis, the saddest being today, as the region broke its record for the most deaths in a single day, with 11 fatalities, bringing the overall total to date up to 326.
The seven men and four women were aged 53, 66, 69, 72, 77, 79, 81, 83, 85, 89 and 96, from Murcia City municipality, Campos del Río, Archena, Ceutí, Blanca, Lorca, Fuente Álamo, Cartagena and Yecla.
Many commentators on social media have been sceptically cruel recently about the deceased being mainly elderly, and probably suffering from other medical conditions which have made their bodies unable to fight off the damaging effects of covid, to which the only reply possible is OLD LIVES MATTER TOO.
903 new cases today
903 new cases have been notified within the last 24 hour period, bringing the total number of ACTIVE cases in the Murcia Region to 10,851 and the total number of cases diagnosed to date in the region to 37,504.
During the last seven days, the Murcia region has reported 5,223 new cases.
Out of interest, a quick look at the figures for 20th June, the day on which Spain officially came out of the first state of emergency and into the new normal, revealed that at this point, after the first wave, the Murcia Region had diagnosed just 1652 cases by PCR in total since the virus struck in early March ( 1567 antibody tests had also given positive results, but antibody figures are not included in official stats). 150 deaths had been reported in total during this period and 1418 had recovered. At this point there were 2 patients in intensive care and 7 hospitalised, so there have been more deaths since the “new normal” began than during the first wave of the pandemic in this region.
Of the 903 new cases reported yesterday, 300 correspond to the municipality of Murcia, 64 to Cartagena, 44 to Alcantarilla, 38 to Lorca, 37 to Molina de Segura, 37 to San Javier, 33 to Torre Pacheco, 31 to Yecla, 26 to Jumilla, 23 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 22 to Alhama de Murcia, 21 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 19 to Archena, 15 to Totana, 13 to Cehegín, 13 to Villanueva del Río Segura, 12 to Cieza, 12 to Mazarrón, 12 to Las Torres from Cotillas, 11 to Fuente Álamo, 11 to Moratalla, 9 to La Unión, 8 to Los Alcázares, 8 to Ceutí, 7 to Bullas, 7 to Fortuna, 7 to Puerto Lumbreras, 6 to Alguazas, 6 to Lorquí, 5 to Águilas , 5 to Blanca, 5 to Librilla, 5 to Mula and 5 to Santomera.
The figures below and graphics relate to FRIDAY as this particular data is not updated at weekends, so the figures above have to be added in and the numbers of recovered patients removed, which won´t be done until Monday, but it does show how each municipality has evolved in the last week and highlights the wide spread of the contagions in the region:
