As the time of year approaches when destructive “gota fría” storms can brew up in the Region of Murcia and the rest of south-eastern Spain, occasionally causing catastrophic flooding, both the CHS water infrastructures management body and the regional government are involved in various projects to cater for such an eventuality and to minimize any damage and inconvenience should the storms strike.
One of these projects is taking place at the Rambla de Biznaga in Lorca, where the regional government is beginning work on the construction of a new bridge. The road crossing the rambla (or floodwater channel) is normally used by around 1,300 vehicles per day, but in the past the channel has become impossible to cross during episodes of heavy rain.
In consequence the government is investing 1.2 million euros in the bridge on the RM-D8 road which leads out of Lorca towards Aguaderas, the Sierra de las Moreras and, eventually, Mazarrón, with the fact that the rambla also receives floodwater from other channels like those of Torrecilla, Béjar and Nogalte when heavy rain falls being taken into account in the design and elevation of the structure. The bridge will be 110 metres long and 10 metres wide, and the site was visited on Tuesday by Patricio Valverde, the head of the Department of Development and Ifrastructures in the Murcia government, and Mayor Fulgencio Gil.
The road will be closed to traffic until work is complete, with a diversion having been created starting at kilometre 2 and following Camino Piña, Camino Almohijar and Camino Real.
