ARCHIVED - Three-month extension for ITVs expiring between June 21st and August 31st
There is a backlog of some 5 million vehicles which ITV centres have to wade through
On Tuesday the Council of Ministers approved a three-month extension for the validity of Technical Inspection of Vehicles certificates (ITV) that expire between June 21st and August 31st.
Minister of Transport, José Luis Ábalos, has agreed the extension due to the sheer size of the backlog which has built up during the Covid crisis and the subsequent difficulties being experienced by drivers in some areas attempting to get an appointment at their local ITV centre for a test.
In short, if your ITV expires between the 21st June and 31st August, you have three additional months in which to ITV the vehicle. However, bear in mind that the ITV period runs from the original date on which the test should have been carried out, so you may find your new ITV only has 10 months left to run if you ITV it 2 months after the original expiry date.
It’s been estimated by the body of “Collaborating Entities with the Administration in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles” (AECA-ITV), that some five million ITV certificates expired during lockdown, hence the backlog.
This is the second such extension; In May the Ministry had published a rather complex and confusing series of extensions for ITV certificates that expired before the 24th May.
The head of the Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda portfolio stressed that while this extension is in force, public goods transport vehicles and business vehicles will have preference in booking technical inspections at ITV stations over and above private vehicles.
So if your ITV has expired, try and get a booking at your local test station as soon as possible; although you are permitted to drive your vehicle without a valid ITV if the certificate expired during lockdown, it is advisable not to leave it too long before trying to get a new certificate; in most cases your new certificate will start when the old one expired regardless of when you have the test. Some expats with vehicles which require testing every 6 months have been complaining that their new certificate is only valid for a couple of months (because they should have had the test done 4 months beforehand). On the other hand, some ITV stations are reportedly dating the certificates from the date on which the test has actually been done.
