ARCHIVED - Spectators banned from international football and basketball matches in Spain
The second wave of Covid closes the gates and turnstiles at Europa League fixtures
Over the last couple of months an effort has been made to allow limited numbers of spectators back into stadia and sports pavilions to watch top level professional teams in action on certain occasions, but with the number of coronavirus cases continuing to rise alarmingly the Spanish authorities have found themselves obliged to close the doors and turnstiles again at international fixtures held in this country.
Since the beginning of the 2020/21 season limited crowds have been allowed to attend European league football and basketball matches, leading to a paradoxical situation in which Spanish clubs have played in empty stadia in domestic league matches but with spectators in attendance for European games. In theory it has even been possible for a football fixture between, say, Sevilla and Valencia to be played behind closed doors in La Liga but with spectators if the two sides meet in European competition.
From now until further notice, though, such anomalies have been removed and spectators are barred at all matches played by professional teams on the grounds that the gathering of large numbers of people is unacceptable in the current situation.
