The Covid-19 vaccination roll-out across Spain continues apace and on Monday May 17 the Ministry of Health announced that more than seven million people are now fully vaccinated having received either two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca or a single dose of the monodose Janssen vaccine
In total 7,213,716 individuals across Spain are fully vaccinated, accounting for 15.2 per cent of the population. Of these, more than 6.4 million have been vaccinated using the Pfizer product.
To date, 22,313,088 doses of vaccine have been administered, with 15,320,846 members of the public having received at least one dose, 32.3 per cent of the population of Spain.
At the moment the single most pressing issue is the AstraZeneca vaccine as the regional authorities anxiously await a decision by the Ministry of Health about whether the second dose can be administered to essential workers.
At the moment 4,826,108 individuals have been given a first dose of AstraZeneca, and only 544 have been administered both doses. A further 1.1 million doses are sitting in refrigerators waiting for the Ministry to authorise their use, so that second doses can be given to essential workers, (teachers, firemen, police and those working in close contact with the public) predominantly aged under 60.
The Commission of Public Health is meeting on Tuesday to discuss the topic yet again, this time armed with the results of the “Combivacs” study, examining whether it is safe to administer a second dose of an alternative vaccine, rather than using AstraZeneca.
1.7 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine were delivered to Spain on Monday and are being distributed to the autonomous regions on Tuesday.
