ARCHIVED - New record increase of 23,850 new cases of covid in Spain during last 24 hours
173 fatalities bring the weekly total to 790
The Spanish Ministry of Health has reported a 23,850 case increase in the total number of positive diagnoses of coronavirus in Spain within the last 24 hours.
9,303 of these were reported by the regional health authorities as having been diagnosed within the last 24 hours, and the remainder are the cases which have been verified and added into the system from amongst the figures reported in the last few days.
The national figures are always lagging behind the daily reports published by the regional health authorities as the Ministry will not admit the cases into its reporting system until they have been checked and verified and the actual date of diagnosis, date on which symptoms first appeared etc verified. Only at this point are they added into the overall total figures at which point they appear within this total.
These latest additions bring the overall total of Covid-19 cases diagnosed in Spain by PCR test to 1,160,083 cases and the accumulated incidence rate for the last 14 days has risen to 468 cases per 100, 000 inhabitants.
173 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the weekly total up to 790 and the total to date up to 35,639.
There are currently 17,520 patients admitted in hospitals with Covid-19 throughout Spain and 2,404 in an ICU, although in the last 24 hours there have been 2,349 admissions and 1,837 discharges.
During the last week 5,056 people have been admitted to a hospital with coronavirus, 348 of them admitted to an ICU intensive care unit.
The occupancy rate for beds occupied by coronavirus patients stands at 14.17% and in ICUs at 25.8%. "This is increasing, very progressively, but it is increasing and several communities are already over 40% of the ICUs, so routine care is already greatly affected and even in some places completely halted", said Fernando Simón during his presentation of the daily figures.
