ARCHIVED - Castilla La Mancha and Castilla y Leon will close borders for 15 days
Madrid will only do so if the Government permits a closure of “just a few days over the weekend”
Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León have agreed to close their perimeter borders until November 9th, following an urgent meeting in Ávila by the three regional presidents, Emiliano García-Page, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco and Isabel Díaz Ayuso respectively.
There is particular concern about the topic of movement around the country due to the All Saints and All Souls festivities this weekend, which is normally marked by family gatherings, very often family members driving back to their birthplace to pay their respects to deceased relatives.
Added to that, Monday is a Bank Holiday in the Comunidad de Madrid, Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura, so many families would normally take a long weekend off and go away for a few days.
Two of the neighbours of the Madrid Region, the two Castillas, have been particularly concerned, due to the large number of families from Madrid expected to visit relatives in their regios this weekend, as have coastal regions such as Valencia, Murcia and Andalucia.
After the meeting this afternoon, the president of the Junta de Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, announced a perimeter closure of Castilla y León as of Friday, October 30th, starting at 2:00 p.m.
The president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, said that the same decision will be made "with some difference" in terms of schedules. "November is a different month, it is a low season for many purposes, and therefore it is a month in which we can be in time to make decisions so that the December high season can be done more normally," said García-Page .
He explained that this Thursday he will sign the decree permitting the perimeter closure, hoping that the next 15 days will allow time for "fighting the curve."
Madrid premier, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, said that now "a new scenario is opening where Madrid will do everything" in search of better coordination.
"I am aware that there will be many displacements. I understand the presidents -of Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha-, but I have to defend the measures of the Community of Madrid, which worked",she said. However, she has asserted that she will propose to the Government that they allow the closure of the Madrid region "for a few days, " effectively only over the holiday period.
This is likely to be a topic of disagreement again tomorrow and satisfy no-one; tonight Murcia announced its perimeter closure to prevent visitors from outside of the region entering and both Andalucía and Valencia have said today that they will close their borders if Madrid does not prevent its citizens heading to the coast. Five other regions have already closed their borders.
