Three of the four patients in critical condition tonight are under 45 years of age and a baby is also ill with Covid.

The sudden rise in new cases recently continues in the Murcia region, with 65 new diagnoses added to the total on Wednesday 5th August.
This brings the total diagnosed to date up to 4,383 and the active cases to 797.
721 of the positive cases are in home isolation, but 76 are now hospitalised, a figure which starts to put strain onto the regional health services once again and four of the patients are in intensive care.
Having covered this crisis day by day since it very first started it is always dispiriting to see the number of aggressive and hostile comments posted on social media from those who do nothing but disparage the necessity to report information and ensure that the expat community is aware of the facts, and one of the myths most commonly espoused by those in denial or seeking a “positive angle” for the current situation is that this virus “is only for old people” and “is no worse than a common cold” for anyone under 65. These individuals may like to know that three out of the four patients in intensive care in the region tonight are under the age of 45, the four patients being 31,41, 44 and 83 and there is also a baby in la Aljorra suffering from the virus.
The Director-General for Health who hosted the press conference today due to the absence of the regional Minister for Health whose brother was brutally murdered by his own son yesterday, emphasized the importance of making the young and middle-aged population aware that they can also be infected and infect others. "The sectors that believe that they are safe from the epidemic are incorrectly analysing the situation, “ he said, “It is very important that this message reaches everyone."
Most of the outbreaks admittedly have been fuelled by younger people, and most relate back to just one woman who came back to her home in Murcia on a flight from Bolivia carrying Covid with her, and subsequently infected her companions which set off this whole chain of contagions, highlighting the importance of testing, awareness and taking responsibility for our own actions. This point was again hammered home again today, as the reason that the outbreak has spread so extensively amongst workers at the Mazarrón agricultural plant is because workers knew they were infectious but were afraid of the economic impact of admitting that they believed they were suffering from Covid, and continued to go to work, infecting their colleagues and prompting the closure of the company.
76% of the 65 positive cases in the municipality relate to this one outbreak and the regional health authority has installed a “Punto Covid “ testing centre in the Mazarrón health centre to test all employees of the company and their close domestic contacts; an increase in numbers is expected to follow in the next few days relating to this outbreak. At the moment no further measures are being taken to confine the municipality itsef as it is believed that the outbreak is confined to the immediate contacts of the company and is not showing signs of having jumped to the tourist areas of the municipality.
The outbreak related to the Atalayas area in Murcia now totals 104 cases; that of Totana 115; and that of Lorca 36.(Today it was announced that Totana would remain in preventative confinement for one further week as the virus is still active).
Today 12 new cases have been detected in the Murcia City municipality, 10 more in Lorca (this outbreak relates to 2 pubs), 11 more in Totana and a new outbreak in Puerto Lumbreras of 9 people which relates to a family celebration held at a restaurant in Lorca. The town hall of Puerto Lumbreras has decided to activate Level 1 of the local emergencies plan and has adopted measures very similar to those of Alhama de Murcia for the period of one week. These include prohibiting the use of infant play equipment and exercise equipment for the elderly in public parks, closing off the main Augusto Vels park from 11pm onwards, closing the summer swimming pool and study rooms, as well as the closure of public sports pavilions and cancellation of socio-cultural events.
Disinfection of streets and public areas will be intensified.
All known close contacts of the family are being PCR tested and quarantined.
Other regional figures today
Nearly 1200 PCR tests have been carried out today, bringing the totals to date to 101,572 PCR swab tests and 63,837 rapid antibody tests. There are now 1729 officially cured patients (these are only related to those who have undergone PCR tests) and the fatalities remain at the same level as throughout July with 151 cases.
