ARCHIVED - 59 irregular immigrants intercepted in Murcian waters
Four pateras were detected off the coastlines of Mazarrón and Cartagena on Wednesday
A period of calm weather is increasingly co-inciding with the arrival of irregular migrants from Algeria and this was the case on Wednesday when four small boats carrying a total of 59 passengers, were intercepted in Murcian waters.
All 59 of those on board were taken to the Cruz Roja installations in the muelle de Escombreras docks in Cartagena for a full medical assessment.
All will be PCR tested and should any of their number yield a positive PCR result, then all will be put into quarantine.
Although the migrants have entered Europe via the Spanish coast, most have little intention of remaining in this country and intend to continue their journey, some of them heading for the UK, Belgium or France.
Spain refuses to grant any sort of residency in Spain for those who arrive illegally in the country and will try to extradite those who have proof of their identity back to their country of origin. Illegal immigrants are not permitted to work in Spain and many of those who enter illegally end up being exploited, only able to find work in clandestine operations or agricultural concerns.
